Did you know? Annually, over 180 000 tons of waste Did you know? Annually, over 180 000 tons of waste are cleared from illegal dumping hot spots! That costs the city, and you as the taxpayer, a staggering R350 million a year just in clean-up. In other words, cleaning illegal dumping costs 20 times more than collecting waste from wheelie bins. That is why to create a clean, healthy and safe community we take our work tackling illegal dumping very seriously.

“Illegal dumping is a severe problem that puts our community at risk of injury and illness and pollutes our ecosystem. In addition, illegal dumpsites can serve as magnets for other criminal activities,” says Gene Lohrentz, CEO of urban management company Geocentric.

City’s WhatsApp channel now available for water City’s WhatsApp channel now available for water queries

The City of Cape Town’s 24-hour Customer Relations call centre has relaunched its WhatsApp channel for all water related queries. The relaunch of the channel will make it easier for residents to contact the City and request assistance.

The new Customer Relations WhatsApp channel is now available on 060 018 1505.

‘I am pleased to announce that residents can now again contact the City’s Call Centre with all their water related queries and for fault reporting by using our 24-hour Customer Relations Whatsapp channel. Our dedicated agents will attend to these urgent WhatsApp requests as efficiently as possible and ensure that the appropriate teams receive the technical service requests. The City encourages residents to make use of this convenient channel,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.

Once the City receives the service request, the customer will receive an automated response via WhatsApp to confirm that the call centre has received the message.

Residents must please ensure that their service requests include detailed information. If the request is linked to a specific property, the City will need the property address, erf number or municipal account number to process the request.

Family street dining and trading comes to Bo-Kaap Family street dining and trading comes to Bo-Kaap this Saturday

The @CityofCT’s family street dining and trading experience comes to Bo-Kaap on 25 June 2022. The event is aimed at benefiting local businesses and trading, and giving residents an open air dining experience.

Following on from successful events in other parts of the city, the street closure event will take place on 25th June between 12:00 to 20:00.

Taste local cuisine, participate in arts and crafts and enjoy live music and performances. It promises to be a fun day for all.
The Bo-Kaap is a community with a uniquely rich history and culture and one of the most visited areas in the city. You can find the best koeksisters, sweet treats and Cape Malay food in the Bo Kaap too. These street dining events are a celebration of the inclusivity of having residents from all over the city sharing and enjoying all that the city has to offer in hospitality, food and culture.

‘Many restaurants, vendors and traders are doing their best to recover from the impact of the pandemic and the City is committed to doing what it can to ensure they get through this, and thrive again. We encourage residents to support local businesses and enjoy what’s on offer within their communities,’ said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Within the rich cultural history of the Bo-Kaap precinct is the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum (IBKM), one of the earliest homes built in the Bo-Kaap area, dating back to the mid-eighteenth century. The Museum was established in 1978 as a satellite location of the SA Cultural History Museum. It was furnished as a house that depicts the lifestyle of a nineteenth-century Muslim family.
The most recommended Tours and other activities in Bo-Kaap are:

1. Cape Town three hour Malay Cooking Class and Lunch in Bo-Kaap
2. Cape Town three hour Bike Tour
3. Cape Town: Half- Day Table Mountain and City Tour
4. Cape Town: Introductory City Tour by Foot and Minibus and Many more

Taking an upstream approach to ocean conservation Taking an upstream approach to ocean conservation

As part of our winter preparedness programme, we haul out all sorts of items from our waterways. This allows heavy rains to safely run along the contours of the land, into the rivers and eventually the sea.

We consistently intervene to keep our drainage system healthy and prevent waste from entering our stormwater runoff systems by methodically cleaning our drain catch pits and drain inlets. Just before winter, we ramp this service up as part of our winter preparedness programme.

Importantly this cleaning means heavy rain runs away from buildings and infrastructure. Preventing damage as much of the cost of flooding is due to the impact that items carried by the water have.

So what happens to all the litter we remove?

You guessed it, most of the litter removed is plastic bottles, glass bottles and cans which are separated and earmarked for recycling.

Winter in Cape Town is no joke! The Cape of Storms Winter in Cape Town is no joke! The Cape of Storms is so called for good reason.

Many of us are even more conscious now of the pivotal role that winter preparation plays in city management – and what the lack of it can look like – in the aftermath of the 2022 KZN floods.

“A combination of terrain challenges, insufficient or ill-maintained infrastructure and increased population density are the main contributors to flooding problems,” says Gene Lohrentz, CEO of urban management company Geocentric, and current management team of the Woodstock Improvement District.

Don't miss - from one of our favourite local outre Don't miss - from one of our favourite local outreach programmes - Slapstick at the @zipzapcircus this weekend.

Circus has historically been a beacon of happiness and joy in hard times and Slapstick, Zip Zap Circus’ brand new, never-before-seen show, will be just that!

A traditional circus show with a 1930s twist whacked with layers of comedy; Slapstick will nostalgically transport the entire family back to the times of Swing, Gypsy Jazz, The Three Stooges and Charlie Chaplin. It will take you back to the days when this type of comedy grew its roots, where a pie in the face was made famous and costumes were a different kind of colourful.

Shows take place at the Zip Zap Dome, 10 Jan Smuts Street, Cape Town, with shows daily at 12h00 and 16h00 on Saturday 28 May and Sunday 29 May 2022.

Zip Zap is fully Covid-compliant and 100% committed to your safety.
